Wonderful! I passed and so did 6 classmates of mine that used this. Loved the explanations on the same page and actually saw very similar questions on the actual board. Recommend this everytime someone asks

So I bought this book to prepare for my ASCP certification and did not try to use it until after the Christmas holiday. The disk does not work with my current windows operating system. I emailed the publishing company and never heard back from them about this issue. I found out 4 other classmates have had this same issue and can never get anyone to help them resolve the issue or process a return.. Don't waste your money buying this product unless you have an old computer with old Windows xp or windows 7 ops

I have been an MLT for many years, and decided to go back to school for my Bachelor's in Medical Technology. I thought after 18 years, I knew a lot of things. Well, after purchasing this book I realized how much I didn't know. There is so much information in here, covering all disciplines of lab practice- from phlebotomy and specimen collection, to Micro(all of your favorite manual methods), to Genetics. The questions range from your basic lab knowledge, to obscure formulas and "old fashioned" test methods. They always say you should understand the principles of a test, not just how to press run. This is a very comprehensive and thorough study guide, and I poked in and out of it for a couple months, being a little hesitant to sit for the boards. Apparently I learned a few things studying from this book because I passed my MLS exam on the first try. I would recommend this book, as you never know what will be on the board exams, because each test is tailored to the individual taking it based on previous answers, so you never know what you will get. Best to be prepared, you can never know too much. Good read!

I love this review. The explanations are on the same page as the questions. You can cover the answers to the right and then check your answers before turning the page. No flipping to the back to find an explanation to a question you're having problems with.

I'm currently studying for my certification for MLT (recent graduate). I took time off after finishing college to regain my sanity. Re familiarizing myself with the material has been more of a struggle than I imagined.I've got the BOC from ASCP, my text books, a LabCE membership (which I recommend), and I purchased this book to have another angle of learning. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I work overnights at a hospital and I have downtime periods where I can study am doing I use just this book. What I like: it's comprehensive; the answers with explanations are on the same page adjacent to the questions; it is sectioned off not only by category of study, but by more-specific areas (i.e. Hemostasis versus platelet disorders ). Also, it comes with a CD that has additional questions in test format. My favorite part about it isn't that it's mostly case studies, which, in my opinion, are the best study tools. If you understand the conditions that are relative to the measurements, remembering abnormalities are much more simple.

This book was very useful. I recommend it for anyone taking ASCP certification for MLS. It is an extensive review. I read only this book and was able to pass at my 1st attempt. It's been 5 yrs since I graduated, and have not practiced for the last 2 yrs. Great book!

Whether you're a student or an instructor, this book has amazingly well-constructed MCQs that covers the most important learning objectives in the CLS 6 different specialties. I especially love the comprehensive explanation of the correct answer as well as the explanation of the reasons behind exclusion of other distractors in the MCQ choices.

The book itself is pretty helpful - the questions have answers on the same page which explain why the answer is correct...however, part of the reason I bought this specific review book was that it came with a CD. I planned on downloading the application to use it to study on my laptop instead of lugging this (substantial) book around. With over 540 pages, it's basically another textbook. I started doing the problems and writing in it so I can't return it to get another copy with a working CD. I followed the installation directions but each time I got an error message saying "the application could not be installed because the installer file is damaged." Save your money to put toward the ASCP study book and e-book.

A home run. Bill Gutman is our best old hand at writing about our best new athletes, and this book shows why. Every kid who dreams of a future in sports -- baseball or anything else -- will find this inspiring and motivating. Every real Yankee fan needs to know what's in this book. Any baseball fan will love Judge's story. And even if you're not into sports, reading about the rise of this young star resonates far beyond the sports and the playing field.

Only the true Yankee fan may enjoy this piece of trash. I only tried it because of my association with this game

This book was amazing. It was very informative, interesting, and I was never bored while reading. I used this book for a school assignment and I think that I'll do great on it because this book is clear and full of information on the one and only Aaron Judge!

I'm a huge Yankee fan and this was a great addition to my Yankees collection of books

Mostly focusing on the 2017 season which any Yankee's fan already watched.

Gave a great insight on how he grew up to become the man he is

I ordered this for my 10 year old grandson's birthday. He is a huge Yankee fan and also a big fan of Aaron Judge. I pre-read the book and must say I was somewhat disappointed. I felt that there was very little human interest and mostly statistics. It read somewhat like a long newspaper or magazine article. I am not sure that he is going to like reading it. He may be too young.

I have a free sample of this book to put on my YouTube page

This is an awesome and uplifting book that I love to refer to again and again. Why not tap our own innate brain power for our healthful advantage? Marisa Peer shows us how and explains it so eloquently. A great deal in life is out of our control but our thoughts, beliefs, actions are right there and only we have access to them. I LOVE this book and appreciate the power it's shown me that I have. Thank you!

This woman is amazing and this book is amazing! I am a certified Marisa fan and this is my latest purchase. I have been waiting for this since last year when I came across Marisa's methods in her previous books YOU CAN BE THIN and ULTIMATE CONFIDENCE. I finished YOU CAN BE YOUNGER just now. It was a wealth of new information, and every information was explained so well. I love her style - she is so supportive and walks one through all that is in the book. This book is very very inspiring and people who are young and not so young, should read it alike. It is so empowering and positive and something which we need so much to guide us today. Thank you, Marisa.

A must read for anyone who wants to look younger. Great tips, easy to follow and to incorporate into your daily life. — Shilpa Punater - Founder, Ageless Face

Fantastic I recommend this book to everyone! I am utilising all the information from Marisa peer on a daily basis.

Whilst I like it as much as any well written books on health, mindfulness and psychology, I would love to read more scientific evidence on the author's theories. Meanwhile, I like the “Tests for your biological age” very much, which include tests for balance, reactions, skin elasticity, flexibility, eyesight and so on. In short, readable, particularly for those over 45 who has little medical knowledge.p.s. When I first read this comic, I thought I was going to hate the art work but when I began to read it I realized the it felt very well with the story. When the Sabrina comics first came out it was about a teenage witch named Sabrina and her funny adventures of trying to live a normal high school life. When the comic first came out it must have been interesting, because I'm sure at the time witches were seen as evil and scary and in a way the comic was making a joke about that. However as the times changed and witches were becoming more "good" it proably wasn't a good gimiac anymore, let's not forget there were a bunch of other high school tv shows and comics. Now this is a darker version of Sabrina think of it as a Sabrina who does satanic witchcraft or in the sense of what the 90s thought satanic witchcraft was. It has some interesting backstories to some character and provides a darker telling of it. My only problem is that it try's to hard to be "dark" and "gritty" I feel like it's taking on cliches in a way.Thank you for reading my review

I love the fact that we get all the original characters from the Sabrina universe but they take a very big dark twist in this world. The art work is good and the dialogue and story are perfect for where things seem to be heading. For those who prefer the dark side this is great. To see these characters who have always been sunshine and bright nights go over to the darkness is pretty sweet.

As a comic book, it was ok, but I don't see the point in taking a character like Sabrina and her Aunties and environment and turning it into a horror comic. Why? To make money, I suppose, and to play into the whole 'dark' world everyone seems determined to live in. Why? Be careful what you wish for, and where you choose to place your focus....it may overtake your life.

If you've read Afterlife with Archie, you shouldn't miss this title. Retro style illustration, along with the period setting and good storytelling, make this a captivating read.

Pretty good, knowing beforehand that this title is from the Archie horror line I'm not surprised by the darker tone than others. Personally I enjoyed the story, retaining all the familiarity of the 90's show but giving the creepy angle. My actual issue is with the art itself. The muted and limited color palette sets the tone but the art just looks scratchy, like sketches for planning a storyboard. I believe horror comics from the 60's looked similar but I found it distracting.

It’s so dark and twisted perfect for Halloween! Can’t wait for the show on netflix! Very dark and not for scaredy cats

Just great. Beatiful art work. Absolutely chilling and original. You feel so much pathos for Sabrina right away and it really makes you emotionally invested!

This is my first comic book and I think it was fun.I read this because I’m waiting for Sabrina netflix series but I hope it not like netflix story

The author went to great lengths in providing crucial and historical evidence of events of Christian white slavery during a time in Europe's and America's history!Charles Sumner provided the list of countries involved in these horrendous acts and was not afraid to list the guilty parties by name.I enjoyed the stories about acts of heroism (Lord Exmouth, Admiral Van de Capellan and John Fox - to only name a few) of the great men involved in trying to liberate the tens of thousands of slaves. Mr. Sumner wrote in some detail how the slaves tried to free themselves. The book is highly informative for any historian and anyone trying to find out about slavery of men or women of any color, religion, or country. On the pages, the ink is somewhat faded (please bear in mind the book was published 1847) in some places or I would have given it a five star but you can still make out a great deal of what was written. A great read!(Where are the movies on this book?)

This is one of Charles Sumner's efforts (published in 1853) to gain support for doing away with slavery in the United States. He is using the outrage about Christians enslaved in the Muslim states of the Barbary Coast to show the inhumanity and un-Christian nature of allowing Black slavery in the South. He presents a powerful history lesson and an even more powerful indictment of slavery anywhere. A very good and powerful book.My only complaint is that Kindle edition as delivered to my original Kindle Fire has no cover art - not even a title page. All I see on my Kindle home page is a blank "cover" with just the percentage I have read. In other words - no title, no author, no subject. And there's no good excuse for this. Interestingly, a download to my newer Fire tablet worked fine.

Wonderful little known history of slavery over the years, with focus on the Christian slaves of the Barbary States of North Africa. I recommend this book for anyone interested in slavery over the years in the world.Senator Charles Sumner was anti slavery, and was the man who was caned until he was unconscience on the floor of the Senate by Representative Brooks of South Carolina the day after he gave an anti slavery speech. This is a very interesting little book where he focused on the white slaves in the North African Barbary states including Morocco, Algiers, Salee, Oran, Tunis, Tripoli and Bacra. He starts out with some history pointing out that slavery had gone on for millennia. People captured in a war were frequently enslaved. Men to do hard work, including rowing gallery ships and the women frequently made concubines. He then addresses the rise of the Islamic religion in North Africa in particular. When Islam expanded via the sword in its early days, it over ran essentially all of Spain. Spain fought for many years to drive the Moors out, and become free of the second class citizenship under Islam. After 1492 when Ferdinand and Isabela re-conquered the last of Spain from the Moors, whom we would now call Muslims, there was an increase in piracy. Ferdinand and Isabela evicted many of the Moors, who moved to North Africa in many cases and became pirates who preyed on Christian ships. The pirates enslaved the crews, in many cases for ransom by their country or family. (He mentions only as a minor note the fact that the Moors were also importing negro slaves from south of the Sahara in much larger numbers than the captured white Christian slaves.) He does an excellent job of tying together slavery over the years. The preying on Christian ships by the Barbary Pirates was a money rising operation against the religious enemies of Islam. At different times the Barbary Pirates preyed on English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, etc. ships, as well as raiding the Christian shores in the Med, and the Atlantic, up as far as Ireland and the English Channel. He also point outs that it continued until the early 1800s, when the US in 1815 sent a squadron over to defeat the pirates get the American captives. However, the real end came in 1816 when the British and Dutch showed up with 5 line of battle ships, 10 frigates, 4 bomb vessels and 5 other small ships, and fired 50,000 shot at Algiers, the largest fortress, and essentially leveled the place. This led to the Barbary Pirates giving up their last of thousands of white Christian slaves and stopping their piracy. He makes the points that negro slavery was ongoing in the world, in particular in the American South and the Barbary Coast at this time, but that it was not addressed when the white Christian slaves were freed. This is a very illuminating book in how Senator Sumner tied together slavery over the ages. The book is extensively foot noted, and reference are provided.

Yes all KINDS of parallels were drawn between white slavery versus black slavery, but I also found the history interesting. This book has piqued my curiosity. North African history in the 18th Century isn't always studied. Give it a try.

An excellent book giving an in depth view of this historical event.

I enjoyed this book and the quaint 1850's English. It chronicles the slavery of Christians from Europe by the Barbary states of Africa.

This book provides an excellent level of context for the North African slave trade that was prevalent up through the early 1800's. Though the book focuses on many specific cases of Europeans and several North Americans captured and sold at the slave markets it also points out that Arab and Sub-Saharan slaves were sold in the same way in the same markets without distinction by racial grouping. The North African slave trade in European captives goes back at least to the days of the Roman Empire and only stopped when different nations including the USA, the U.K. and the Dutch sent military vessels to end it in the early years of the 19th century. After that the UK Royal Navy conducted slave patrols around North and West Africa to halt all international slave trading.

1812: The War That Forged a Nation, by Walter R. Borneman

From Publishers Weekly

This thoroughly readable popular history of the War of 1812 may exaggerate in its claim that the war forged AmericaÂ’s national identity; after all, there were enough regional identities left lying around after the conflict to cause a national civil war. But otherwise itÂ’s a fine narrative history that traces the major of events of the war, from the preliminary plots by James Wilkinson and Aaron Burr that revealed the ambitions of Westerners for territorial expansion, through New EnglandÂ’s secessionist Hartford Convention to the Battle of New Orleans, which wrapped up the war in 1815. Borneman makes clear that the performance of the American army was mostly disgraceful, that the Canadians can pat themselves on the back for courage and endurance and that the decisive victory of the American navy was not the famous frigate duels but the Battle of Lake Champlain in 1814. Borneman (Alaska: Saga of a Bold Land) is also strong in vivid personal portraits (the gigantic Winfield Scott and the diminutive and sickly James Madison) and evenhanded as far as atrocities (too many, by all parties) are concerned. Even the annotation and bibliography of this sound introduction will propel those whose curiosity is piqued to read further in all directions.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

From the ample literature about the War of 1812, which includes Theodore Roosevelt's minor classic The Naval War of 1812 (1882), Borneman extracts people and events and integrates them into a popular narrative of the conflict's campaigns and battles. Ultimately, the war with Great Britain became a stalemate, lending the conflict the appearance of futility, but historians such as Andrew Jackson biographer Robert Remini regard the war as a second American war of independence. This is generally Borneman's stance as he relates the major American grievance against Britain--sits seizures of American sailors and ships. However, Borneman also makes clear that the drive of aggressive "war hawks" to declare war was rooted in their desire to capture Canada and Florida. Toss in the horrifically remorseless Creek War, plus Shawnee warrior Tecumseh's exhortations for a last stand against white settlement, and the result is a geographically spacious and violent drama. A lively narrator and explainer of a war fought with muskets and sailing ships, Borneman will be welcomed by military-history readers. Gilbert TaylorCopyright © American Library Association. This is a good overview of the War of 1812. You get a very good commentary on the war,why it happened, what was the cause of it; something about all the main participants and the ultimate fate of them. Also a good summary of the war and the lasting effects on how it helped forge and unify a young nation. I knew mostly nothing about this war before reading it. My main knowledge was that Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner during the siege of Fort McHenry. But it is so much more than that. Largely forgotten now this was important time of this nation. It was young and still not fully united. Most of the northeastern states were against this war and threatened nullification. But in the end the nation became more united than anytime since the Revolution. Borneman doesn't get bogged down into the fine details and pretty much keeps it very interesting throughout the book. I admit I got lost at points on the Naval campaigns but that is due to my own lack of knowledge of ships and how they work. His chapter on the Battle of New Orleans is very well done. I liked it that he started off this chapter by mentioning Johnny Hortons Battle of New Orleans song from the 1950's. I had almost forgotten this song and went back and listened to it after finishing this book. The song pretty historically accurate,BTW. All in all a very good book on the War of 1812.

The characters were well drawn. I felt like they were sketches done before a fine painting. Additional details would have helped. The military work was done so that it satisfied military historians and novices alike. More maps would have enlightened the reader on some of the campaign issues. The workload along smoothly telling the communication story of the time. Being apart from the leaders would have been an interesting time....New Orleans happening after the Treaty of Ghent was signed.I enjoyed the telling. The conclusion seems spot on too. Forging the colonies into a concerted whole is the war's result.

Mr. Borneman's book "1812: The War That Forged a Nation" is an excellent introduction to this rather stupid and confusing conflict. While at times the author spends a little too much attention on comparative throw weights of opposing ship and flotilla's guns, this superfluity of detail is more than made up by the clear and concise way he writes about a war that was fought on at least six fronts and which involved a large assortment of personalities.Mr. Borneman should also be commended for giving just the right amount of background detail concerning the situation in the Northwest Territory prior to the war as well as the overall political lay-of-the land in the U.S. starting with the Jefferson administration. If one is looking for a short, well told history of this interesting and mostly overlooked time in our country's history, your time will not be wasted by picking up "1812..."

Interesting take on Jackson, Claiborne and Jean Lafitte in the battle of New Orleans. Good information on world history during this period.

We often think that our "current situation" is unique in history. It's not. The story of America's final transition from colonial to power player is here. Corruption, 2nd-guesses, power plays and characters far more colorful than our childhood history books ever told us make this an exciting read. I learned so much!

A great read into the causes of the War of 1812 and into the personalities of the generals, admirals, and politicians who fought and died for their side. Delving into personalities makes the conflict real and helps you to understand how battles were either won or lost.

Coming out of the Revolutionary War, how did we get into another conflict with Great Britain so soon? I did not know, but wanted to learn more. The War of 1812 was a mystery to me. This book was well written and answered my questions. Our desire to conquer Canada, the burning of our capitol, and the Battle of New Orleans were all tied together for me. A great read for a person interested in the history of the United States.

This is a very readable account of the War of 1812 aimed at ordinary readers who want to learn more about it. Borneman is not really a historian, or at least not an academic historian; this is reflected in his bibliography which consists mostly of secondary sources. So, there is nothing new here that has not been told in other books. But I don't have any problem with that. I got just what I wanted from the book: a brief history (under 300 pages) of the war that was informative, accurate, well organized, and enjoyable to read. Some reviewers have criticized Borneman's writing style which is very familiar and conversational; I did not mind it.Borneman sensibly split his narrative into 3 parts: "Drumbeats", "Bugles", and "Finale". The first covers the events that lead to the war. The second covers the first part of the war in which America took the offensive, attempting several times to conquer parts of Canada. The third covers the last year of the war during which American was on the defensive against an England no longer restrained by the Napoleonic War in Europe. He does a good job covering both the land and naval engagements. While there are some maps, some extra or improved ones would have helped since some locations described in the text were not on any maps.My only real caveat (which other reviewers have shared) is that Borneman claims on his final page (and his subtitle) that the War of 1812 made the United States more united and changed the nature of the "United States" from a plural to a singular term. Given the fact (which he acknowledges) that we still had to fight the Civil War, this seems farfetched. While it might be true that Americans after the war chose to fondly remember their victories and forget their defeats, there was still a lot of division between the different regions of the country. It took a lot longer for the "United States" to really be a singular entity.

A marvelous account of the story of Crazy Horse. I've read numerous accounts of the Great Sioux War, starting with Mari Sandoz, of course, and including among others, Utley, Connell, Philbrick, and Robinson, and this is the first cohesive description of the events, including the who did or said what to whom, that lead up to the killing of Crazy Horse from the time of his surrender. Greed, jealousy, betrayal, and the hunger for power and fame, are human traits that are front and center in many of the situations related to the Crazy Horse story. The book is meticulously footnoted and sourced. However, the Sioux that are front and center did not speak English. All of what they said is through the words of an interpreter. I think it is important to be aware of this as youread.I thought the context that Powers used to describe the Custer fight was especially interesting. After taking you through Crook's Battle of the Rosebud, there is only the mention of a dusty cloud from the direction of the Little Big Horn area a week later as Crook and his command are licking their wounds after their fight. The Custer fight is described in a later chapter as Crook and Sheridan are off on a hunting and fishing trip in the vicinity of the Little Big Horn battle. Some reviewers have complained about the infinite detail, which is, in my opinion, a strength. However, if you dont have some familiarity with the material to begin with this many not be a good place to begin.

After reading Bray's Crazy Horse a year ago, I approached Tom Powers' book with some trepidation. I'm pleased to say that Powers did precisely what Bray failed to do: sort through the evidence and parse together a coherent narrative, weighing sources and giving the reader ways to gauge their accuracy and reliability. you will finish the book with a clear sense of what happened and why.Let me give you just one example of how Powers goes beyond the paper-shuffling in Bray's "biography": Bray reports that Crazy Horse's friend Touch the Clouds said, while looking down at the dying chief, "He got what he deserved." Sorting through the notes, we can discover that this "statement" was recorded by an Army officer responsible for Crazy Horse's death and the officer did not understand Lakota. Powers mentions the same report, and points out that what Touch the Clouds actually said in Lakota was probably "He was looking for death, and it came." It's a trivial point, but Powers uses it to title and end a chapter, and his correction shows a sensitivity to Lakota culture that is absent from Bray's book.Although Powers most foregrounded source is Bill Garnett, a half-Sioux interpreter who didn't like Crazy Horse, what emerges here seems fair, if painfully sad, and the Indian sources, which Bray scarcely seems aware of, are present on every page. That does not mean a partisan polemic. Powers doesn't paint the players in black and white. Perhaps the saddest thing in the book is the universal prevalence of venality in humans. There have been some complaints about the digressiveness of the book. I attribute that to our collective ADD. Powers understands that "we are all related," and like Dennis Banks' autobiography, the story begins before the central figure's birth and extends beyond his immediate surroundings. The book does need a good edit, but primarily because Powers tends to repeat certain telling or evocative details as if mentioning them for the first time. For the leisurely reader, it's a minor quibble.Buffs and experts will quarrel over details, because the "true" story of Crazy Horse has been revocably lost to myth, lies, and love. But this is the book to measure the other historical accounts against.

Thomas Power's The Killing of Crazy Horse is most deserving of the praise offered by fellow authors Larry McMurtry and Evan Thomas. Power's work of non-fiction ventures miles beyond the compelling story of Crazy Horse to encompass a rich journey into the final years of the Sioux and the demise of their culture upon the great northern plains.Power's detail into the relationships of members of the Sioux families together with their interface with the white trappers, adventurers , soldiers, translators and scouts tells the story of what actually occurred to bring about the destruction of this once proud Indian Nation. Power's research is so outstanding that he seems to have personally absorbed the Sioux culture, language, relationships, spirituality, pride and passions and then realistically tells the tale in a captivating style. The context is so strong it seems that Powers was present in the teepee, on the battlefield, smoking the pipe, on the Powder River, at the Sun Dance and at The Killing of Crazy Horse.Unique in its approach, Powers relates the story through the voices of the Indians, the families of Sitting Bull , Crazy Horse , Red Cloud, and the half breeds who served both the Indians and the military often in duplicitous and self dealing fashion. General Crook's role as the major facilitator in the demise of Crazy Horse delves into the personality and motives of the man who so influenced the fate of Crazy Horse and the northern tribes. The story of the Oglala Sioux and Crazy Horse can not be told without Custer and the Little Big Horn. I have read much of this historic event but never before have I seen this epic through the eyes of Crazy Horse and the Sioux themselves, present on the Little Big Horn Battlefield that day.Every word counts in the very best of non-fiction writing and The Killing of Crazy Horse meets this standard on each page. Crazy Horse: " I am no white man! They are the only people who make rules for other people who say, if you stay on one side of this line it's peace, but if you go on the other side I will kill you. I don't hold with deadlines. There is plenty of room, camp where you please."In his Afterword, Powers perfectly captures this reader's reaction to his work: " My effort here has been to tell the story in a way that helps readers to experience its weight and quality-the feel of it." Powers words " the feel of it " become abundantly apparent. The Killing of Crazy Horse eclipses all expectations of " the feel of it," learning from the people, places, triumphs and tragedies of the Oglala Sioux.Thomas Powers is a Pulitzer Prize winning writer. He has also written Intelligence Wars : American Secret History from Hitler to al-Qaeda; Heisenberg's War: The Secret History of the German Bomb; and The Man Who Kept the Secrets: Richard Helms and the CIA.For more go to gordonsgoodreads.com
